On 1 February this year, voting began for HouseEurope!, a European citizens' initiative for renovation instead of demolition, which aims to establish renovation of the existing building stock as the new normal in Europe. Due to property speculation, huge square metres of existing buildings remain empty or in a state of ruin - easily demolished and rebuilt or kept in a state of disrepair by investors in order to maximise profits. So, according to projections, as much as two billion square metres could be demolished by 2050, which is about half of all buildings in Germany and exceeds the entire square footage of Paris or Berlin. More at Kajža.
