At the end of the 38th PDA, the Piranesi 2021 international architectural awards were ceremoniously conferred. The Mayor of Piran Đenio Zadković gave a welcoming speech. The awards were conferred by the president of the PDA organizing committee, Maja Ivanič, and the new director of Piran Coastal Galleries, Mara Ambrožič. This year's Slovenian national Piranesi selector, Mitja Zorc, gave a professional speech. We sincerely congratulate all the winners!
FINAL PIRANESI JURY REPORT 2021
Piran, 26th November 2021
Piranesi Award is conferred since 1989, this year for the 32nd time in a row. The international jury for the 2021 Piranesi Awards met on 26 November 2021 in Monfort Exhibition hall in Portorose. Members of the jury, traditionally composed of every year Piran lecturers, were:

For 2021 Piranesi award 54 architectural projects were nominated by national selectors from 11 European countries: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia and Serbia. 37 students’ projects were nominated by students’ selectors from 19 European Faculties of Architecture from Graz, Spittal, Vienna, Banja Luka, Sarajevo, Split, Zagreb, Thessaloniki, Budapest, Pescara, Trieste, Podgorica, Bratislava, Ljubljana, Maribor, Belgrade, Kragujevac, Novi Sad and AA London. All together 89 projects arrived to Piranesi exhibition
The traditional criteria of selection for the Piranesi exhibition were:
> Considered setting in an urban or natural space
> Spatial and design accordance with the context
> Contemporary innovative spatial plan and layout
> Respectful approach to the natural and cultural heritage
> Contemporary understanding of traditional and autochthonous architectural elements
> Innovative details
> Considered use of color, materials, texture and light
All Piranesi winners receive a chair of Slovenian architect and designer Niko Kralj, donated by our sponsor RexKralj. Glass sculpture for Piranesi Award was designed by young Slovene architect Ajda Racman who won 1st prize at student tender, organized in 2017 by DESSA Gallery and Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design. The sculpture was made in famous Steklarna Rogaska/Rogaska glassworks.

Saint Gellért ports and event hall for the Saint Margaret High School, Budapest, Hungary, 2020

The sports hall is a project that cleverly balances the architectural resolution of the program with a quiet poetry. The tectonic integration of structure, light and material, together with the effective site strategy offers a convincing solution to the sports hall typology. By burying a large portion of the building and using the rooftop as an extension of the park, the project’s surface area is doubled to form an outdoor recreational area. The light, metal structure of the facade extends upwards to become a U-shaped protective fence that affords continuity with the surrounding context.

Hunting Grounds, Pet Crematorium, Drnov, The Czech Republic, 2021

The project injects a surprising program into the ruins of a military air defense site to produce a captivating effect that is both ephemeral and grounded. The magic of the shimmering, mirrored wall is that it dissolves into the landscape while also embodying a sense of otherworldliness. A simple element creates an enigmatic experience whereby pet owners can find solace.

The square offers all that we would hope for in a public space in a historical city center: social space, connectivity, and a conversation with the surrounding urban fabric. The sophisticated detailing coupled with the no frills approach reconfigures the formerly, unarticulated open space into a vibrant urban place with a clear identity. The skillful manipulation of the ground in section allows for a covered market, small shops and various seating areas.

The proposal imagines a thought-provoking strategy for reconnecting the city of Rijeka back to the sea. Under the umbrella title of a theme park, the project revitalizes the port city through a series of “hybrid infrastructural elements” that create a synergy between the largely obsolete, industrial port and the new programs. The depth and detail with which the proposal explores the topic offers an exciting approach to large scale, contemporary architectural problems whereby collaboration, flexibility and future possibilities are key principles.
